No-Code vs Custom Software: Which Is Right for Your Business

No-code tools are genuinely good for some jobs and genuinely wrong for others — here's how to tell which one you're facing.

What no-code is actually good at

Tools like Airtable, Zapier and website builders let you assemble a working solution fast, without writing code, for problems that fit their pre-built patterns well. For a simple internal tracker, a marketing landing page, or connecting two popular SaaS tools, no-code is often the faster and cheaper answer.

Where it breaks down

No-code tools struggle once your process has real complexity — conditional logic that doesn’t fit the tool’s model, a need for custom reporting, or integration with a system the platform doesn’t support. At that point you’re often paying monthly fees to fight the tool’s limitations rather than solve your actual problem.

A practical test

If you can describe your process in a single sentence and a popular no-code tool already has a template close to it, try no-code first. If your explanation needs three “except when” clauses, you’re probably looking at custom software.

Our take

We’re honest about this even when it costs us a client — if a no-code tool genuinely solves your problem, we’ll say so. Custom development earns its cost when your process is specific enough that no template fits, not by default.
